Kolej Yayasan UEM or KYUEM (formerly known as Kolej Matrikulasi Yayasan Saad) is a residential college situated in Lembah Beringin, Selangor, Malaysia. It is owned by Yayasan UEM, and is also part of the UEM Group. KYUEM offers the A-Level programme under the Cambridge International Examinations examination board. Results are good, and every year KYUEM students receive ‘Best in the World for Subject’ Awards.
Initially planned by Tan Sri Halim Saad, Kolej Matrikulasi Yayasan Saad (as it was then known) is a fully-residential college, modeled upon top British boarding schools such as Westminster School. The teaching staff consists of Malaysians as well expatriate teachers from Britain and India. The college attempts to keep the ratio of 60% local teachers and 40% expatriates.
A pastoral care system is utilised, with groups of students being put under the care of teachers. These teachers (referred to as tutors) may or may not teach their tutor group, and function to provide social rather than academic assistance.

Overview
Japanese Garden (now Zen Garden)
KYUEM currently boards approximately 380 students mostly between the ages of 17 to 20 at a charge of MYR 58,000 (Arts Stream) and MYR 60,000 (Science Stream) for its 24 months program. While for its 18 months program, MYR 43,500 (Arts Stream) and MYR 45,000 (Science Stream).
The college is headed by the headmaster who is appointed by the Board of Governors (BOG) and Board of Trustees (BOT). It contains 4 houses, each headed by a housemaster, selected from the members of the teaching staff.
All of the school’s graduates go on to universities, about 10 each year to Oxford or Cambridge and a third to Imperial, LSE, Warwick, UCL, Kings and York. Some of the graduates also went on to study at top universities in the United States such as MIT and UC Berkeley
KYUEM curriculum
The academic curriculum at KYUEM is very demanding. On top of their core 3 or 4 A-Level subjects, student also read an extra one or two AS Level subjects of their choice and other compulsory Key Skills subjects which may include ICT Skills, Thinking Skills (certificated by Cambridge Examination Syndicate) and the compulsory Islamic/Moral and Malaysian Studies.
Students normally take three A-Levels, although it is possible to take four. The College has three academic departments, the Department of Arts, the Department of Science and the Department of Mathematics.
The following A-Level subjects are currently offered by the Arts Department – Accounting, Economics, English Literature, History, Sociology and Business Studies.
The Science Department is responsible for Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Computing and Psychology.

Facilities
Students live in chalets, and there are 104 serviceable chalets. There are 42 male chalets, and 62 chalets for female students. The football field and the multipurpose hall (MPH) serve to separate both areas.
Each chalet is able to house 4 students, each with their own room. Every room has its own bookshelf, ceiling fan, study table and chair, bed, and closet. The rooms are divided by partitions. Since these partitions do not reach the ceiling, it is possible for students to overhear their chaletmates in other rooms. There are two toilets per chalet, with shower also installed to allow students to maintain a somewhat civilised standard of hygiene. In addition, there is a common room which is equipped with an air-conditioner and a wireless-ready desktop computer. Unfortunately internet access here can be faulty from time to time.
In 2006, one of the staff apartments – Block F – was renovated to allow for more student accommodation, due to an earlier shortage of housing. Although the apartments were readied in time for the July 2006 student intake, there were sufficient chalets to accommodate all the students at the time. During that time, alumni returning to college for events such as the annual Alumni Weekend were allowed to stay there. However, the apartments have begun to be used by students in the January 2007 intake.
A new block was also completed in July 2006. The second floor of the block is currently used by the Arts department for classes, whereas the old Arts department classes (on the ground floor of the Academic Block) were converted into science laboratories.
The teachers and staff live in apartments. The teachers’ apartments consist of three blocks situated next the boys’ chalet area, whereas the staff apartments are located behind the female students’ chalet area.
The college has 10 science laboratories, two lecture theaters, three IT laboratories and air-conditioned classes. Initially there was only one academic block, with only 8 science laboratories. However, a new block was added in 2006, and the non-laboratory classes on the ground floor were renovated to become two science laboratories.
The college is equipped with an Olympic-size swimming pool, a million-ringgit football field, two basketball courts, two tennis courts, two volleyball court and a multipurpose hall. As well as housing two squash courts, the multipurpose hall can be used as a futsal court, 4 badminton courts, or a basketball court (not simultaneously). Usually it is set up to form 3 badminton courts, with the area of the final badminton court used to set up ping-pong tables.
The college Internet facilities are scheduled to be overhauled by January 2008.
Clubs and Societies
KYUEM students are known best for their leadership and communication skills. This is because there are many active clubs and societies in the College which students themselves organise. Through these clubs and societies, students organise events which exhibit the exceptional abilities of the student body, as well as provide a healthy outlet for creative and free expression.
College Magazine
Veritas is the official school magazine, also being the longest-running college publication. Edited by students under the Veritas Club at the college, although liable to censorship, its has a tradition of satirising and even attacking school policies, as well as documenting recent events. The magazine is published as both an organ of record and a forum for comment, debate and the expression of individual opinions in the school. It is published once in every term (twice a year) and normally distributed at the start of each term.

Song
The College Song has been an important part of Kyuemians life which the college considers them to be a unifying force. It is sung by the students in the Great Hall every week at the start of each assembly.
Midst Malaysia’s verdant uplands
Stands the college built for all
Education is its mission
Scholarship its clarion call
Knowledge is the key to freedom
Study is the road to truth
We shall strive to serve our nation
As leaders of Malaysia’s youth
Kesukaran diatasi
Kami kan bersatu hati
Menuju puncak jaya
Membela cita semua
Marilah kita berusaha
Tegakkan kebenaran
Demi bangsa dan negara
Kami sanjung setiap masa
